Energy car challenge - update PDF Print E-mail

Thursday, 06 August 2009 10:05

Remember our success in the RACV energy challenge? We're at it again. The Maroondah Grand Prix is the next challenge awaiting the students involved in this year’s Energy Car program. With over 70 teams from all over the state entered, and up to 3500 spectators expected to attend, this will certainly be an exciting weekend.

Maroondah is a two-day event, with scrutineering and practice on the saturday and a six hour race on Sunday. Race dates are saturday, 12th September, and Sunday, 13th September, 2009.

The Grand Prix will be a perfect lead-up to the RACV Energy Breakthrough in Maryborough and a great chance to test the improvements in last year’s cars and see how our new car will perform.

One of our innovations for this year is to design and build a new aerodynamic body for our cars and Mr Inglis has been instrumental in making this happen. Chris’ new design is stunning and will be completely different to our old body shape. We are very grateful to him for all his help.

All students involved in the Maroondah Grand Prix will receive an information sheet early next week regarding cost and further details of this fantastic event.

Good luck to our fantastic teams: Night Rider, Electric Storm and Road Runner!!

Cross Country championship looms for Simpson teenager

For someone about to pitch her running skills against the best in the state, Simpson teenager Janelle Fisher seems anything but nervous.
The Cobden Technical School student will be the only representative from her school at this Friday's Victorian Secondary Schools' Sports association (VSSSA) Cross Country State Championship. Yet she remains laidback in her training and her attitude to this week's big competition. "We're supposed to train," she said. "I go for a jog every now and then and I play netball as well which helps to keep me fit."

It will be Janelle's first run in the three kilometre state event after a winning performance at the recent Western Zone competition. Janelle placed 10th out of a field of about 80 competitors at the Ballarat race to claim her place in the state finals. The 16 year-old will now head to Bundoora where she will face the biggest cross country event of her life. The top 20 from the Western Zone qualified for the state event which would be the same for all the other zones so it's going to be a huge race," she said.

Cobden Technical School sports co-ordinator Joanne Arundell said the qualification process was a lengthy one. "It's quite a process, students have to qualify through the Hampden Zone and then through the Western Zone; Janelle has done very well," she said. "We normally have one or two students qualify each year which is great:'

An insight into photojournalism

By MADELEINE McNEIL

WORK experience is designed to give secondary school students a taste of what a specific career is really like. It helps them decide if that career is something they would like to pursue in the future. For Cobden Technical School student Naomi Sullivan, 15, a week of work experience at Warrnambool newspaper The Standard was a rewarding experience.

Naomi said she enjoyed the week and would like to study photography. However, she said she would prefer to be a wedding or fashion photographer rather than a newspaper photojournalist.

Bronte top apprentice

Variety is the spice of life - just ask furniture making apprentice Bronte McCann. The first year apprentice has been cutting his teeth at Cobden Kitchens and Joinery and is loving every second. "It's just really hands on," he said. "I wouldn't like sitting in an office doing the same thing over and over'

The 18-year old's dedication to his trade saw him recently named Homesglen TAFE's apprentice of the year for certificate three in furniture making. Bronte attends TAFE in weekly blocks combined with his work for Greg Sueter at Cobden Kitchens. In that time the former Cobden Technical School student has done everything from kitchen joinery to huge home entertainment units. There is definitely plenty of variety," he said. "We are always doing something different:'
