The Corangamite Extra, THURSDAY, July 16, 2009 An insight into photojournalism
By MADELEINE McNEIL WORK experience is designed to give secondary school students a taste of what a specific career is really like. It helps them decide if that career is something they would like to pursue in the future. For Cobden Technical School student Naomi Sullivan, 15, a week of work experience at Warrnambool newspaper The Standard was a rewarding experience.
Naomi said she enjoyed the week and would like to study photography. However, she said she would prefer to be a wedding or fashion photographer rather than a newspaper photojournalist.
"I like weddings and models more than news," she said. The year 10 student worked with photographers Damian White and Rob Gunstone. A highlight for Naomi was seeing a picture of a house she took published in the Domain publication with her name next to it. Naomi also took social and cafe pictures for the company's community newspapers. During the week Naomi learnt how to edit photos using computer program Photoshop and how to use a professional photojournalist camera. "I didn't think the photographers would go out as many times a day (as they did)," she said. Naomi. who enjoys taking pictures of her Cobden netball teammates on weekends, said the photographers from The Standard taught her to make a photo the best shot it could possibly be.
