Cross Country championship looms for Simpson teenager

For someone about to pitch her running skills against the best in the state, Simpson teenager Janelle Fisher seems anything but nervous.
The Cobden Technical School student will be the only representative from her school at this Friday's Victorian Secondary Schools' Sports association (VSSSA) Cross Country State Championship. Yet she remains laidback in her training and her attitude to this week's big competition. "We're supposed to train," she said. "I go for a jog every now and then and I play netball as well which helps to keep me fit."

It will be Janelle's first run in the three kilometre state event after a winning performance at the recent Western Zone competition. Janelle placed 10th out of a field of about 80 competitors at the Ballarat race to claim her place in the state finals. The 16 year-old will now head to Bundoora where she will face the biggest cross country event of her life. The top 20 from the Western Zone qualified for the state event which would be the same for all the other zones so it's going to be a huge race," she said.

Cobden Technical School sports co-ordinator Joanne Arundell said the qualification process was a lengthy one. "It's quite a process, students have to qualify through the Hampden Zone and then through the Western Zone; Janelle has done very well," she said. "We normally have one or two students qualify each year which is great:'

An insight into photojournalism

By MADELEINE McNEIL

WORK experience is designed to give secondary school students a taste of what a specific career is really like. It helps them decide if that career is something they would like to pursue in the future. For Cobden Technical School student Naomi Sullivan, 15, a week of work experience at Warrnambool newspaper The Standard was a rewarding experience.

Naomi said she enjoyed the week and would like to study photography. However, she said she would prefer to be a wedding or fashion photographer rather than a newspaper photojournalist.

Cobden Technical School principal Peter Rock stands where the school's state-of-the-art science rooms will be built.

Tech's $1.97 million windfall

Cobden    Technical School's science facilities date back to a time when Led Zeppelin were gods and flares were fashionable. But the school's now set to leave the '70's behind after it won $1.97 million in Government funding last week.

The Federal Government's Building the Education Revolution grant will see the school boast a new state-of-the-art facility by June next year. Principal Peter Rock said the  school community was overjoyed at the news.  The science labs date back to the 70's and the reality is science has come a long way since then," he said. "it's just fantastic."
The new 650sqm science centre will include specialist laboratories, preparatory room, classrooms, a staffroom and toilet facilities. Mr Rock said the design also included an outdoor area. Students can't learn in a bad environment and having that outdoor area there will create a nice atmosphere," he said.
